Windows Phone 8.1 tip: How to enable ‘double tap’ on space bar to insert a period using keyboard

Windows Phone 8.1 along with Update 1 has got a lot of awesome features like Cortana, folders on Start Screen, double tap to wake, option to mark messages in conversations , VPN support, ability to move apps to SD card and more.

There is another awesome feature and probably the one which was present in other mobile platforms, for a long time, is the ability to insert a period ‘.’ without the need to press the ‘period’ button separately.

Simply follow the instructions below to know how to double tap to insert a period.

Note: You must be running Windows Phone 8.1 or Windows Phone 8.1 with Update 1 to get this feature.

Instructions:

  • Whenever you want to insert a ‘period’ simply double tap on the space bar which will automatically insert the ‘.’ and also insert a space.

Tip: This double-tap to ‘period’ works in almost all the apps that support text input from keyboard.

Can’t get this feature to work?

  • If you can’t get this option to work, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Keyboard’ and here press the language you are using e.g. English (United States)
  • You will see the option ‘insert a period after I double-tap the Spacebar’. Check it and your option will get enabled.
