Windows 8.1, the free update for Windows 8 which was launched in October 2013 has now taken the second position in the run for most popular desktop OS in the world. Windows 7 which has been leading the market since the last few years now holds more than 50% of the market share. Windows 8.1 holds 11.92% whereas, Windows XP has dropped to the third place.
According to the stats by StatCounter, Windows 8.1 has taken the second place for the most used desktop version whereas, Windows XP is finally decreasing slowly after its support has ended in April 2014.
Windows 7 is still dominating the market with 55.95% becoming the most popular Windows version on desktop despite being 5 years old.
Windows 8.1 holds 11.92% of market share closely trailed by 11.79% of Windows XP which has decreased from 17.18% of last month.
MacOS X is the only non-Windows OS for desktop in the top five OS being used around the world taking 8.98% of share.
Windows 8 has 5.5% of total market share followed by 2.98% of Vista and Linux with 1.31% share. Other OS has 1.57% which includes Windows 10 Technical Preview and old Mac OS versions.
