How to update your Windows Phone 8/8.1 devices to Windows Phone 8.1 GDR 1 now

Microsoft has finally started to seed the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 (GDR 1) which brings a couple of new and exciting features to the mobile version of Windows. Windows Phone 8.1 Update is now available for all developer preview users.

Microsoft has introduced a Preview for Developers Program which lets you enroll in the developer preview and get the latest updates by Microsoft earlier than those who aren’t enrolled in it.

Disclaimer: Enrolling in Windows Phone Preview for Developers Program will void your phone’s warranty and it may include some bugs. So, proceed at your own risk and Windows8Core and its team won’t be responsible for you , if you brick or damage your phone.

If you are one of the people who want to get the latest update and upgrade your phone to Windows Phone 8.1 GDR 1 then, you are at right place. We will be helping you in getting the latest update on your phone.

Follow the instructions below to enroll in Preview for Developers Program and install the latest GDR 1 update for Windows Phone.

Note: Is is recommended that you backup your important files, photos, videos and other things on your phone. Your phone’s battery must be 50% or more charged to make sure your phone’s battery doesn’t run out during update process.

Instructions:

– For devices running Windows Phone 8:

If you are running Windows Phone 8 on your device then, you will have to enroll yourself in the Preview for Developers Program and then, upgrade to proceeding updates starting from Windows Phone 8.1 Preview and then, going onwards to Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1.

To check which version of Windows Phone your device is running, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘About’. Here you will see Windows Phone 8 as version. If that’s the case then, you may follow the instructions afterwards.

  • First of all, you need to show yourself as developer but, you don’t need to be an actual developer or know coding to do so. Simply go to this Microsoft AppStudio’s webpage (appstudio.windows.com) and register yourself using your Microsoft account.

Note: You must register using the same Microsoft account that is being used on your Windows Phone device.

  • Once done, you will need to install the Preview for Developers app from this link.
  • After installing the app, launch it and accept the terms and conditions.
  • You will be asked to sign into the app. Use the same Microsoft account which you used to register on Microsoft App Studio. Once signed in, check the ‘Enable Preview for Developers’ option and press ‘Done’. You may close the app.
  • Now, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘About’ and press ‘Check for updates’ button. You will now see updates available for download.
  • Download and install them one-by-one. Your device will restart after each update so, be sure to get back and check for updates again.
  • You will first get the pre-requisite updates followed by Windows Phone 8.1 Preview update which might take a while to download and install. Be sure to grab a cup of copy for the update process to complete.
  • After installing a couple of updates and few restarts, you will finally be taken to the Windows Phone 8.1 Preview. Step-by-step instructions to update to Windows Phone 8.1 Preview can be found in this tutorial article.
  • Now, go back to ‘Settings’ > ‘Phone update’ and press ‘Check for update’. This time, you will see an update with version ‘8.10.14147.180’. Install it since it’s the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 update.
  • Once the installation has finished, you will finally get the Windows Phone 8.1 Update on your device.

– For Windows Phone 8.1 devices (not Developer Preview, the stable release):

If you are running a Windows Phone 8.1 device with official release by Microsoft or your device manufacturer like Lumia Cyan by Nokia then, you can also get the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 easily.

 To check which version of Windows Phone your device is running, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘About’. Here you will see Windows Phone 8.1 as version. If that’s the case then, you may follow the instructions afterwards.

– For Windows Phone 8.1 Preview devices (enrolled in Developers Preview):

If you are running a device with Windows Phone 8.1 Preview then, getting the latest Windows Phone 8.1 GDR 1 is very simple.

  • Just go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Phone update’ and press ‘Check for updates’.

Note: You must have installed and enabled the ‘Preview for Developers’ to get new updates.

  • You will be showed a new update. Download and install it.
  • Once installed, you will get the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 on your device with new features.
