How to share files/media between your Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1 via WiFi


Sharing files between your mobile devices and your PC’s has always been a complete hassle where you have to use some kind of medium to transfer files between your cellular devices and your PC’s. But, with Windows Phone and Windows 8.1, this has proved to be very easy thanks to a number of third party apps available in Store.

Sharing files between your Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone has never been that easy due to many reasons. You won’t need to use any physical medium like a USB cable to transfer files between your Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 PC nor need to upload to a specific cloud storage like OneDrive.

Instead, you can just use your Wi-Fi connection to share the files between your Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 PC and you won’t need to connect any physical medium and you won’t be using your internet connection.

Before proceeding to the instructions, let’s take a look at the requirements to make this sharing possible.


  • You will need to download the ‘Share My Files’ app on your Windows 8.1 PC which can be downloaded from this link. This app will be used as the host to share files between your PC and Windows Phone
  • You will need to have an active Wi-Fi connection. Internet connection is not necessary
  • Both of your devices i.e. Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 PC should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network
  • Your Wi-Fi router should support file sharing. If your Wi-Fi network doesn’t support file sharing then, you may create virtual Wi-Fi by following the instructions here. It supports file sharing.
  • Last but, least, a Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 PC

Now, let’s proceed to the instructions for file sharing over Wi-Fi networks.


This method lets you share files from your PC to Windows Phone 8.1 and from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 8.1 PC using Wi-Fi network

  • Open the Share My Files app on your Windows 8.1 PC. You will be asked to configure the app. Select the download folder and then, press ‘Start Sharing’ button.


  • You will be showed different web addresses. Type any of it in the Internet Explorer on your Windows Phone 8.1. Your Share My Files webpage will open.

Note: If any of the address doesn’t work then you might try others.

  • Now, press ‘Add files’ or ‘Add folder’ and browser for your desired one on PC. You can select from folders which will show the whole content of that folder or specific files to share.
  • The shared files will appear in ‘Share My Files’ webpage on your Windows Phone 8.1.


  • Similarly, you can browser for files on your Windows Phone 8.1 and share files including photos, OneDrive items and other things stored on your Windows Phone’s internal memory. Use the ‘Select files‘ command in the ‘Upload files‘ section.

Tip: You will need to open the webpage in Desktop mode to access the uploading option on your Windows Phone’s browser.

Note: Files stored on your Windows Phone’s external memory can be accessed by pressing phone and then selecting SD card from bottom.


  • Once you select files from your Windows Phone or Windows 8.1 PC to share, they will appear immediately on the other device.
  • You can download files manually on your Windows Phone whereas, they are downloaded automatically to your PC in the folder you selected opon configuration.
  • The files are shared on lighting speeds over your Wi-Fi networks. Your file share speed depends on the capabilities of your Windows 8.1 PC’s network card, your router and your Phone. I was able to get upto 50MB/s transfer speeds.

Note: You must keep the Share My Files app open on your Windows 8.1 PC and the web page on Windows Phone to continue file sharing.
