How to add icons to folder names with text in Live App Folders of Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 is now available for Developer Preview users of Windows Phone which adds a couple of new and exciting features. One of the features is the ability to create Live App Folders on the Start Screen of your Windows Phone which lets you group apps inside a folder and the tile of the folder still show live updates from the apps within.

The folders are very easy to create and are useful in many ways and lets you conserve space on Start Screen by reducing tiles and grouping them inside folders.

You can also rename the app folders to your desired ones like Mail, Social, Games etc. but, you cannot just add text to its name but, you can also use the text-to-emoticon feature of Windows Phone 8.1.

You can use different icons as the name of your folders like ‘Cars’, ‘Airplane’ and ‘Taxi’ etc for your Travel apps and ‘Mail’ icon for your Email accounts (refer the screenshot below).

You might be wondering how I inserted the different icons as the Live App Folder’s titles and the answer is pretty simple and you can do the same by following the instructions below.

  • First of all, open up any text editing app like Messaging or Office and simply write the name of the folder for which you want the icon e.g. ‘Mail’ and press space bar. The suggested ‘Mail’ icon will be showed in the suggestions box of your keyboard. Press it.

  • The icon will be inserted along with the text. Now, copy it.

Tip: Press the text and it will be highlighted. You can drag the highlighter to select whole text along with icon. Once selected, press the ‘Copy’ button which pops up beside the highlighter.

  • Now, go to the Live App Folder where you want the ‘Text + icon’ and enter into the Title rename mode by long tapping the top border.
  • Once you get the option to rename the folder name, press the ‘Paste’ icon on your keyboard in the suggestions box and your text + icon combination will be inserted as the name of your folder.

  • That’s all! You can use different type of icons as the Live App Folder names and it will show on Start Screen as well.
